Now let's talk about how to use pepper spray. I'm gonna sort of build an acronym here. The first thing is to recognize a potential threat. I warn my family that if they see something suspicious, if they feel that something may be suspicious, if they think they might be going in to an area that's uncomfortable, they're just starting to get this feeling that "I have to pass this individual on the sidewalk." "I'm walking on campus in school, and there may be a dangerous environment." "I have to walk, and it's from my car to a building." I encourage everyone I meet and train to have their pepper spray ready before they're ever put in a position where they may need to have it. So recognizing an environment where you need to use your pepper spray will allow you to prepare yourself and have it available instead of having to search your purse, digging around for it, hoping that it's still in your book bag, and now you've got a different bag with you, before it's too late. So that's the first foundational piece to using pepper spray. Have it when you need it, and have it early, so that you're prepared to use it before the threat is within striking distance. Now, the steps on using pepper spray. In this particular style of pepper spray, which is my recommendation because it comes with a way to hook it onto a book bag, purse or on your keys. It comes with this lever that is able to keep it safe so that you can't suppress it and spray it by accident until you actually arm it. Arming it means to take your thumb, you have it held in your hand, and slide the lever over into the armed position. Now, making a fist around it with your thumb on top, we're gonna follow these next steps. So, remember this acronym: R. A. S. E. or, sounding like: raise. Like raising your pepper spray, but spelled "R.A.S.E." Recognize, Acquire, Arm, Aim, Spray, and Escape. Follow this R.A.S.E. acronym to properly spray your pepper spray, stop the aggressor, and escape to a place of safety. You know, it'd be great if we knew that pepper spray would be all that we would ever need to be able to protect ourselves in any situation. But what if the pepper spray doesn't work? What if it's too windy? What if it malfunctions? Though this particular brand is very good about its' accuracy and its' dependability. What if it does? What if it's knocked out of our hands? What if we're surprised? There's a lot of what ifs. So that's why, we're gonna now move you into the actual combat techniques that are simple to learn, easy to acquire, and very simple to remember and execute in order to neutralize the threat and defend yourself in most situations. Let's get started.
Pepper spray is one of the most effective tools for quickly neutralizing a threat. For pepper spray to be effective, you need to have it when you need it and have it early. It should be easily accessible like attached on a purse, bookbag or keychain. Remember the acronym, RASE. Recognize a threat; Acquire, Arm, Aim the pepper spray; Spray at the eyes and face of the victim sweeping side to side; Escape quickly from the attacker.
