What’s in a Typical BLS Course?

Wondering what is the difference between BLS and CPR? Good question. In reality, CPR and BLS are often used synonymously. They both can refer to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and related life-saving techniques.

However, BLS often refers to a healthcare-specific CPR course. Otherwise known as a Basic Life Support certification, your BLS course will train you in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as well as how to perform additional emergency care skills such as using a bag valve mask, checking pulses, and performing 2-rescuer CPR.

Unlike most CPR programs out there, ProTrainings also includes emergency readiness training, such as The Five Fears of CPR Rescue and Accessing EMS with Technology.

Created by a licensed paramedic and professional CPR instructor, the BLS certification course is based on the latest American Heart Association and ECC/ILCOR guidelines and taught in professional terminology healthcare workers are familiar with.

In BLS courses, you’ll learn what to do in cases of shock, respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, and choking for adult, child, and infant victims. You’ll also learn multiple rescuer skills, including 2-rescuer CPR and AED skills, the CPR team approach, and bag valve mask training.

This Course Includes:

  • Follows AHA guidelines
  • 4.0 CME/CE credits
  • Certification card available to purchase for $59.95

How Long Does a BLS Certification Last?

Similar to most CPR programs, the BLS certification lasts for 2 years.

After conducting several studies, the Resuscitation Quality Improvement department of the American Heart Association (AHA) found that individuals who complete a CPR training rarely retain their CPR skills over time – even if they are in the health care profession.

Because of this common trend, the AHA recommends that anyone required to have an active and valid CPR or BLS certification should renew their certification every 2 years.

To renew your BLS certification, you will need to complete the BLS recertification process before the 2 year period ends. You can renew as early as you like and your CPR or BLS certification will be extended for 2 more years beyond the date of recertification.

If the 2 year period lapses and you haven’t completed your BLS renewal, your certification will be considered “expired” and you will need to complete the entire training from the beginning in order to get recertified.

How to Get a BLS Certificate?

There are three ways to earn a BLS certificate: in a classroom, online, or in a blended program. Talk to your employer about their requirements for your training methodology and if they have recommendations for a training provider.

Classroom learning is great for people who like to be in a traditional setting, ask their instructor questions, and get hands-on experience at the same time as learning the course material.

Blended programs are ideal for those who want the convenience of online learning but who also require the hands-on skills training of an in-person course.

The most convenient way to receive high-quality training and BLS certification is online. When earning your BLS certificate online, you can access your course materials immediately, progress through your training at your own pace, and print a PDF form of your BLS card immediately after passing the final exam.

No matter which way you choose, ProTrainings offers high-quality training that is accepted by 99% of employers, including healthcare institutions.

Is BLS or ACLS Better?

The short answer: neither.

Your choice to complete a BLS certification or an ACLS certification depends entirely on your work environment and what requirements your employer has.

Basic Life Support (BLS) teaches basic life-saving skills that are important for any healthcare professional and can be provided anywhere. It’s the first line of defense in the chain of survival.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an advanced program designed for RNs, EMTs, and those who are often working in a setting with additional medical equipment and medication available.

So while ACLS is more advanced, it is only available in specific medical settings, making BLS just as important to a person’s survival. Neither is more important than the other; rather they work together as a team to support brain life and then get the patient stabilized.
