The scene is safe for both me as a rescuer and the use of an AED. My gloves are on, my rescue mask is available with a one-way valve. "Sir, are you alright, are you OK? Can you hear me, sir, can you hear me?" There's no response. "You in a plaid shirt, go call 911 and come back, I might need your help." If I didn't have an AED, I would tell them to bring an AED back with me. I check for normal breathing and I check for a carotid pulse. This patient is not breathing normally and has no pulse. [AED speaking instructions] Clear [counts to 30, gives dummy two breaths, repeats this process four additional times until instructed by AED to stand clear], clear. I'll continue CPR until help arrives, or until the patient revives, begins moving or breathing normally again.
