We're now gonna look at how and why we lift correctly. We have to move things correctly otherwise we can cause ourselves or others injury. First example is just something basic like moving a chair. Now the obvious quick way of people trying to move something is just to bend straight over. Got our back straight, legs straight and it's putting massive strain on the lumbar region, this area around here on his back. So he can get a lot of pain here. Also problems with the neck. If he lifted it up at that point that's where injuries can happen. Another quick way people tend to lift stuff is just literally to grab hold of it and walk away. But the action there of grabbing and twisting whenever we lift something wanna keep the back as straight as possible. The twisting action of the spine is where we can damage the soft tissues and cause serious pain. The actual lifting process is quite straightforward to start with. You wanna get yourself close to the load you're moving. You need to bend down keeping your back straight, your shoulders level and your chin up and lift the load. When you're lowering the load down, you need to do exactly the same but in reverse and when you put it down onto the floor make sure it's nice and secure. The final consideration in moving something is can we turn this load to more manageable? If it's maybe a box is it necessary to seal the box down? But something like a chair here that may well be there's a simpler way of moving it. Close it. Lift it up, keep the load close to you, and then you can walk on and move it to where you need to. What we've got here is someone lifting and lifting at a height. You can always make life easy for yourself. If you have to lift up to get something you want to try and get it close to you. So always consider using maybe some steps especially stand up. So by propping the steps in place to start with, bringing the weight of the box closer into your body. When you then come down the steps you can keep it nice and safe and then move it onto where you need it.
If we move people or things incorrectly, we can cause ourselves or others injury. Some key elements of proper lifting are keeping the back straight, head up, the load close to your body, and avoiding twisting.
