Purpose/Goal: The goal of this course is to provide the health care professional with an understanding of the types of postpartum depression disorders, as well as their prevalence, causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

For most women, the birth of a baby is a joyous and exciting time. However, for some women, childbirth is accompanied by depression, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, and even suicide.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to do the following:

  • Describe the three types of postpartum depression disorders.
  • State the incidence and symptoms of postpartum blues.
  • State the incidence and symptoms of postpartum psychosis.
  • State the incidence of postpartum depression in the United States.
  • Identify the theories about the causes of postpartum depression.
  • List the symptoms of general depression and postpartum depression.
  • Identify the risk factors for postpartum depression.
  • Describe methods of screening women for postpartum depression.
  • Explain treatments that are available for women who suffer from postpartum depression.
  • Identify issues related to the use of antidepressants in the postpartum woman.
  • Describe the issues surrounding male postpartum depression.

Complete the course post exam (CE Test) with a score of 80% or greater. Complete all fields of the course evaluation form. Certificate of Completion is provided once the course post exam is passed per criteria above.
