CE Requirements for Nursing in Kentucky

RNs, LPNs, and ARNPs are required to complete 14 contact hours each annual licensing period. A minimum of 2 contact hours of HIV/AIDS is required every 10 years. There is a one-time requirement at initial licensure of 3 contact hours in Domestic Violence and 1.5 contact hours in Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma.

RN licenses expire October 31 of each year.

LPN licensure period is November 1 through October 31 of each year.

Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma, also known as "Shaken Baby Syndrome" (1.5 hours), is a one-time CE requirement covering the recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma. Nurses have three years from the date of licensure to complete the course.

All nurses are required to earn two contact hours of approved HIV/AIDS CE within the appropriate ten-year period. Must be approved by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services

Nurses seeking reinstatement, licensure by endorsement from another state, and examination candidates educated outside of Kentucky must earn three contact hours of KBN-approved domestic violence CE within three years of licensure into Kentucky. This is a one-time requirement.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) credentialed nurses are required to earn five contact hours of approved sexual assault CE each licensure period (forensic medicine or domestic violence CE will meet this requirement).


KY Pediatric Abuse Courses

  • There is a one-time requirement of 1.5 contact hours.

KY HIV/AIDs Courses

  • All nurses are required to earn two contact hours of approved HIV/AIDS CE within the appropriate ten-year period.
