Summary of CPR Certification Requirements for Indiana



  • Teachers in Indiana are required to have a Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR, AED certification.
  • The Indiana Department of Education requires Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR, AED with skills evaluation component. Required training should include the Heimlich Maneuver.
  • A practical (hands-on) skills component is required by the state or by your local district to maintain employment.
  • Those teaching Sports Management, Physical Education, Nutrition or Health courses may have additional requirements.
 

Course Content


Teachers in Indiana usually need a Basic Life Support(BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, Child and Infant CPR, AED, and the Heimlich Maneuver.



Delivery Method

Teachers in Indiana may complete their training in-person or via a blended course in order to meet their state licensure requirement. Different school districts may require a specific training method or a specific provider.

The Indiana Department of Education requires Teachers to maintain a CPR certification that adheres to the Healthcare Provider level training standards of the American Heart Association or its equivalent. The Board has a list of Approved Providers here.

Board Statement:

Per IC 20-28-5.5-1, applicants applying for an initial teaching license (and at the time of conversion or renewal of any kind) must have successfully completed training in:

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation that includes a test demonstration on a mannequin,
  • Removing a foreign body causing an obstruction in an airway, and the Heimlich Maneuver;
  • Beginning July 1, 2011, the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); and
  • Hold a valid certification in each of these procedures from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association or other providers as approved by the department.
