CPR Class Content Requirements for California Dental Hygienists

Dental Hygienists in California need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Dental Hygienists may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.

The Dental Board of California requires Healthcare Provider level CPR certification with practical skills component that is accepted by the Board, AGD/PACE, or ADA/CERP approved.

1016. Continuing Education Courses and Providers.

(C) The mandatory requirement for certification in Basic Life Support shall be met by completion of either:

(ii) A BLS course taught by a provider approved by the American Dental Association's Continuing Education Recognition Program (CERP) or the Academy of General Dentistry's Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE).

For the purposes of this section, a Basic Life Support course shall include all of the following:
1. Instruction in both adult and pediatric CPR, including 2-rescuer scenarios;
2. Instruction in foreign-body airway obstruction;
3. Instruction in relief of choking for adults, child and infant;
4. Instruction in the use of automated external defibrillation with CPR; and;
5. A live, in-person skills practice session, a skills test and a written examination;

Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) CPR Certification Requirements

Summary of Board Requirement

AGD requires to maintain CPR for Healthcare Providers that includes practical skills evaluation component that is approved through the AGD Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE) program. AGD PACE accredited organizations listed here.

Training to ensure appropriate action in the event of an unexpected injury or illness occurring during dental treatment or within the dental office. Dental Hygienists in California are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that usually includes a practical skills evaluation through a classroom or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not always accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits.
