Adult First Aid, CPR, & AED Certification

In the ProTrainings Adult First Aid, CPR, & AED Certification course, you’ll learn how to help adults during life-threatening events such as: 

You’ll learn how to perform CPR on an adult and how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) on an adult. 

In addition to these skills, you will learn important injury prevention information, such as pool safety, childproofing the home, poison control, abuse and neglect awareness, and how to reduce risk of bloodborne pathogen exposure or handle an exposure incident.

Good question! Adult CPR and first aid online certification programs often go hand-in-hand, but it’s important to understand the difference and set your learning expectations accordingly. 

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and it is the primary skill recommended in the case of stroke, heart attack, or drowning. 

First aid, on the other hand, applies to tending to wounds or injuries. Learning first aid prepares you to handle situations such as choking, concussion, injuries, and bleeding.

It’s not uncommon for someone who needs CPR to also need first aid and vice versa.  Because of this, adult CPR and first aid are two sides of the same coin. They complement each other and can help you be more effective in the event you do need to help someone.

For the purposes of offering first aid and CPR, someone is considered an “adult” when they are about 12 years and older. 

We use the term “about” because the distinction comes down to whether the individual is at puberty age, which can range from the age of 11 to 14. 

When looking at victim ages from the perspective of a CPR provider, you’ll notice a lot of overlap. CPR and First Aid training programs are often categorized as “infant,” “child/pediatric,” or “adult.” 

Yes! By completing the Adult CPR & First Aid certification program with ProTrainings, you’ll also learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) on an adult. 
 
Because this program is specific to adults, you will not learn specific skills needed to use an AED on a child or infant. It’s important that you do not generalize the information you learn in the Adult course to children and infants.  They have very different medical needs and must be treated differently from adults.
