CPR Certification Requirements for Teachers in Ohio


Ohio is a unique and special state, and it’s one of the states that has recently seen a surge of support for online-based CPR certification in recent years.

  • Teachers in Ohio are required to have an Adult, Child, and Infant Pediatric CPR, AED and First Aid certification.
  • The Ohio Department of Education requires a Lay Rescuer CPR, AED certification. Required training should include; Adult, Child, Infant CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • A practical (hands-on) skills component is required by the state or by your local district to maintain employment.
  • Most employers will require a Lay Rescuer CPR, AED, and First Aid certification for all ages.
  • Those teaching Sports Management, Physical Education, Nutrition or Health courses may have additional requirements.

Delivery Method

Teachers in Ohio may complete their training in-person or via a blended course in order to meet their state licensure requirement. Different school districts may require a specific training method or a specific provider.

Ohio Department of Education Preschool Rule 3301-37-04 Staff
(I) It is the programs responsibility to ensure the following:
(1) Each staff member has completed and is current with an approved course for age-appropriate first aid and CPR in accordance with rule 5101:2-12-10 of the Administrative Code.

Ohio Department of Education School Age Childcare (SACC) Rule 3301-32-03 Staff requirements and Ratios
(M) Each staff member shall have current valid age appropriate first aid, age appropriate CPR, child abuse recognition and prevention, and management of communicable disease certification in accordance with rule 5101:2-12-10 of the Administrative Code. A staff member with current valid age appropriate first aid and age-appropriate CPR training shall be readily available during field trips.
