CPR Certification Requirements for Teachers in Iowa

  • P.E. and Health education Teachers in Iowa are required to have an Adult, Child, and Infant Pediatric CPR, AED and First Aid certification.
  • The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners requires a Lay Rescuer CPR, AED certification. Required training should include; Adult, Child, Infant CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • A practical (hands-on) skills component is required by the state or by your local district to maintain employment.
  • Most employers will require a Lay Rescuer CPR, AED, and First Aid for all ages.

Teachers in Iowa usually need a Lay Rescuer CPR, AED certification. Required training should include; Adult, Child, Infant CPR, AED and First Aid with a practical (hands-on) skills component.



Delivery Method

Teachers in Iowa may complete their training online, in-person or via a blended course in order to meet their state licensure requirement. Different school districts may require a specific training method or a specific provider.

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners requires Teachers to maintain a certification in Adult, Child, and Infant Pediatric CPR, AED and First Aid with a practical (hands-on) skills component.

Board Statement:

282—13.28(272) Minimum content requirements for teaching endorsements.
13.28(8) Health. K-8 and 5-12. Completion of 24 semester hours in health to include coursework in public or community health, personal wellness, substance abuse, family life education, mental/emotional health, and human nutrition. A current certificate of CPR training is required in addition to the coursework requirements.

13.28(14) Physical education.
a. K-8. Completion of 24 semester hours in physical education to include coursework in human anatomy, human physiology, movement education, adaptive physical education, personal wellness, human growth and development of children related to physical education, and first aid and emergency care. A current certificate of CPR training is required in addition to the coursework requirements.
