CPR Certification Requirements for Nurses in New York


New York is a unique and special state, and it’s one of the states that has recently seen a surge of support for online-based CPR certification in recent years. 

Just like any state, it’s important to know what the acceptance is for online CPR certifications. Below we’ve prepared a list of the specific approvals of ProTrainings courses for Nurses in the state of New York.

  • Nurses in New York are required to have a Healthcare Provider level CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) and First Aid Certification.\
  • The New York State Board of Nursing does not require Nurses to maintain CPR certification for licensure.
  • BLS/CPR certification requirements are determined by the employer or medical facility upon employment.
  • Most employers will require Nurses to maintain a Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • Renewal certification methods can be done 100% online, blended (online + hands-on), or in a traditional classroom course. Check with your employer to see what they accept.
  • For continuing education; Nurses can claim CE credits through the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCCC) for BLS/CPR, ACLS, and PALS Certification.
 

Course Content


Nurses in New York usually need Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) and Standard First Aid Certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, two-person CPR assist, and the use of a bag-valve-mask.



Delivery Method

Nurses in New York are required to maintain the Basic Life Support level of CPR for Healthcare Providers and a First Aid Certification. Employer guidelines determine if the course needs to include a practical skills component or not. Acceptance of 100% online CPR courses will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution.

When applying for continuing education credits through a national association, make sure to obtain the proper course type accepted through those organizations.

Some employers may require a specific brand of training and certification program. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content before you take your class.
