CPR Certification Requirements for Athletic Trainers in Michigan


Michigan is a unique and special state, and it’s one of the states that has recently seen a surge of support for online-based CPR certification in recent years.

  • Athletic Trainers in Michigan are required to have an Healthcare provider level CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • The Michigan Board of Athletic Trainers requires Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR, AED for all ages with a hands-on component.
  • Most employers will require a Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR.
  • For continuing education; Athletic Trainers can claim CE credits for BLS/CPR Certification with a practical portion.
  • BOC requires to maintain CPR certification for Healthcare Providers with a practical skills component.
 

Course Content


Athletic Trainers in Michigan usually need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Athletic Trainers may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.



Delivery Method

Athletic Trainers in Michigan are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that includes a practical skills evaluation through in person or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits for Athletic Trainers.

Some employers may require a specific type of training, or may leave it up to the State’s requirement. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

Board Statement:

ATs must have a current emergency cardiac care (ECC) certification in their BOC profile. Annually, ATs will be asked to upload their current ECC certification (card or certificate) or be prompted to confirm their current ECC certification.

ATs must be able to:
Demonstrate ongoing certification in the competencies outlined in the BOC’s ECC guidelines.
Maintain documentation for current and expired courses for up to two years after the reporting period.

ECC certification programs must include all of the following:

  • Adult CPR
  • Pediatric CPR
  • Second rescuer CPR
  • AED
  • Airway obstruction
  • Barrier devices (e.g., pocket mask, bag valve mask)
  • Demonstrated skills (Online ECC courses are acceptable if skills are demonstrated and tested in person by a qualified instructor. The in-person test can include video technology.)

Acceptable ECC providers are those adhering to the most current “International Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care.”

Board Statement:

R 338.1309 Licensure by examination.

Rule 9. An applicant for an athletic trainer license by examination shall submit a completed application on a form provided by the department with the requisite fee. In addition to satisfying the requirements of the code and the rules promulgated under the code, the applicant shall satisfy all of the following requirements:

(c) Have successfully completed emergency cardiac care training from a program that satisfies the requirements of R 338.1355 within 3 years before licensure and hold an unexpired emergency cardiac care certification.
