  • Teachers in Alaska are required to have an Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, AED and First Aid certification.
  • The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development directs school districts to mandate crisis intervention training, as well as complete CPR and First Aid to Teachers and other school employees.
  • School Districts require Teachers to have a Lay Rescuer CPR, AED certification. Required training should include; Adult, Child, Infant CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • A practical (hands-on) skills component may be required by your local school district to maintain employment.
  • Those teaching Sports Management, Physical Education, Nutrition or Health courses may have additional requirements.

The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development requires the school districts to maintain records that a certification in Adult, Child, and Infant Pediatric CPR, AED and First Aid is on record and current. A hands-on skills demonstration may be required at the local district level.

Board Statement:

Sec. 14.33.127. Crisis intervention training.
(a) The department shall approve crisis intervention training programs for schools, which shall include training in
(1) evidenced-based techniques that have been shown to be effective in the prevention of restraint and seclusion of students;
(2) evidence-based techniques shown to be effective in keeping school personnel and students safe when imposing physical restraint or seclusion of students;
(3) evidence-based skills related to positive behavior supports, conflict prevention, understanding antecedents, de-escalation, and conflict management;
(4) first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and
(5) applicable policies and procedures.
