Course Content


Personal Trainers in Hawaii usually need an Adult CPR and AED certification. However, some employment at certain facilities may have other CPR requirements, such as Child, Infant CPR, AED or First Aid.



Delivery Method

Personal Trainers in Hawaii are required to do the Adult CPR and AED certification that includes a practical skills evaluation through in person or blended training process. A 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

B. Eligibility Requirements

4. Candidates for the NETA-CB Group Exercise Instructor certification and recertification must hold valid adult CPR certification from a nationally-recognized provider (e.g., ARC, AHA, ASHI, NSC). Candidates for the NETA-CB Personal Trainer certification and recertification must hold a valid adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification from a nationally-recognized provider (e.g., ARC, AHA, ASHI, NSC). The NETA-CB will only accept CPR/AED certifications that include a live hands-on practical skills evaluation completed in-person or virtually with a qualified and authorized instructor. The NETA-CB will not accept CPR/AED certifications that are completed entirely online without a live hands-on practical skills evaluation. Candidates must submit documentation (e.g., copy of official certification card (front & back) or certificate) of valid CPR (for Group Exercise Instructors) or CPR/AED (for Personal Trainers) to NETA prior to the examination. NETA will not accept a letter in lieu of an official card or certificate

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)

The American College of Sports and Medicine (ACSM) mandates that Personal Trainers maintain a certification in Adult CPR and AED.

Board Statement:

Effective July 1, 2022, ACSM will no longer grant a six-month grace period after passing an ACSM certification exam to complete CPR/AED certification. The ACSM Certification Board will continue to accept blended, hybrid learning CPR/AED classes – online learning and in-person skills assessment. No provisional CPR/AED classes will be accepted. Exam candidates must have completed CPR/AED certification in order to schedule or apply to take an ACSM exam.

National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that can help save a person's life if their breathing or heart stops. Because important, hands-on skills are needed to effectively perform CPR, ACE requires that any CPR course taught online must INCLUDE a hands-on skills check. However, the hands-on skills check may take place either in-person or virtually. Both formats are effective in demonstrating skills, and both are accepted by ACE.

National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF)

Summary of CPR Certification Requirements for Hawaii:

The National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF) requires Personal Trainers to maintain a valid CPR certification throughout the two (2) year period.

All NCSF professionals are required to submit proof of current CPR certification. A photocopy of the CPR card showing that CPR is current at the time of application for recertification is required from each NCSF professional. The CPR certification must have been earned during the current two (2) year period of certification. The NCSF does not denote a particular CPR provider; any valid CPR credential is acceptable. *Individuals who do not complete this requirement will be denied recertification.
