  • Dentists and Dental Assistants in Massachusetts are required to have a Healthcare Provider level CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry requires Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR, AED with practical skills component.
  • Most employers will require a Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR.
  • For continuing education; Dentists and Dental Assistants can claim 3 CEUs through the board, or 4 basic CE credits for BLS/CPR Certification with a practical portion from these national agencies;
 

Course Content


Dentists and Dental Assistants in Massachusetts usually need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Dentists may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.



Delivery Method

Dentists and Dental Assistants in Massachusetts are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that includes a practical skills evaluation through a classroom or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits.

Some employers may require a specific type of training or may leave it up to the state’s requirement. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry requires Healthcare Provider level CPR certification with practical skills component that is accepted by the Board, AGD/PACE, or ADA/CERP approved.

Board Statement:

234 CMR 8.00: CONTINUING EDUCATION
Each dentist, dental hygienist and dental assistant shall complete continuing education as a condition precedent to license renewal.

8.03: Required Continuing Education
(1) A licensee shall complete continuing education as a condition precedent to the biennial renewal of a license in the following areas:
(b) Continuous certification in CPR/AED, or BLS, or, if the licensee has an anesthesia permit issued pursuant to 234 CMR 6.00: Administration of Anesthesia and Sedation, then the licensee must maintain continuous certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Pediatric Advanced Life Support commensurate with the level of anesthesia permit obtained.

Training to ensure appropriate action in the event of an unexpected injury or illness occurring during dental treatment or within the dental office. Training topics may include medical emergency prevention; development of an action plan, recognition of patient distress and emergency drugs and equipment.

Recertification Requirements:
1. Earn CDE credits every year. Earning Continuing Dental Education (CDE) credits is one requirement for DANB recertification. There are a variety of ways to earn CDE credits, including in-person and online.
2. Hold current DANB-accepted CPR certification. All DANB certificants must have current CPR, BLS or ACLS certification from a DANB-accepted provider.
