Tragically, many of these emergencies are preventable.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"931\">As a master-certified pet first aid and CPR instructor, and director of education for the Pro Pet Hero Instructor Program, I\u2019ve made it my mission to help pet parents and pet professionals recognize choking, respond quickly, and save lives.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"933\" data-end=\"966\">Choking vs. Coughing in Pets<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"1046\">The first step is knowing whether your pet is truly choking\u2014or just coughing.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1048\" data-end=\"1452\">\n<li data-start=\"1048\" data-end=\"1236\">\n<p data-start=\"1050\" data-end=\"1236\"><strong data-start=\"1050\" data-end=\"1062\">Coughing<\/strong>: If you hear a harsh or hacking cough, it means <strong data-start=\"1111\" data-end=\"1134\">air is still moving<\/strong> into the lungs. Causes can range from allergies to infections, but the airway is not fully blocked.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1452\">\n<p data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1452\"><strong data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1250\">Choking<\/strong>: If something is obstructing the trachea (upper airway), your pet may make <strong data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"1366\">gasping, wheezing, or stridor sounds<\/strong> on the inhale. This is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate action.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1494\">Signs of Choking in Dogs and Cats:<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1683\">\n<li data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1525\">\n<p data-start=\"1497\" data-end=\"1525\">Gagging or retching sounds<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1571\">\n<p data-start=\"1528\" data-end=\"1571\">High-pitched whistling or wheezing noises<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1596\">\n<p data-start=\"1574\" data-end=\"1596\">Drooling excessively<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1620\">\n<p data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1620\">Pawing at the mouth<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1621\" data-end=\"1670\">\n<p data-start=\"1623\" data-end=\"1670\">Gums turning blue or pale from lack of oxygen<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1671\" data-end=\"1683\">\n<p data-start=\"1673\" data-end=\"1683\">Collapse<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1685\" data-end=\"1734\">How to Perform the Heimlich Maneuver on Pets<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1967\">In a choking emergency, you\u2019ll need to perform abdominal thrusts\u2014commonly known as the <strong data-start=\"1822\" data-end=\"1852\">Heimlich maneuver for pets<\/strong>. Always perform <strong data-start=\"1869\" data-end=\"1899\">five thrusts on the exhale<\/strong>, then check the mouth to see if the object can be safely removed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"2067\"><strong data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"1983\">Important:<\/strong> Make a fist with your thumb tucked inside your fingers to avoid injuring the pet.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2099\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14095 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.protrainings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/PPHAug2025BlogKittyHeimlichPic-692x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"cat heimlich\" width=\"394\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.protrainings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/PPHAug2025BlogKittyHeimlichPic-692x1024-1.jpg 692w, https:\/\/www.protrainings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/PPHAug2025BlogKittyHeimlichPic-692x1024-1-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.protrainings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/PPHAug2025BlogKittyHeimlichPic-692x1024-1-100x148.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2099\">For Cats and Small Dogs:<\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2334\">\n<li data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2153\">\n<p data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2153\">Hold the pet against your chest, facing outward.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2154\" data-end=\"2203\">\n<p data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2203\">Find the soft spot just behind the rib cage.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2204\" data-end=\"2265\">\n<p data-start=\"2207\" data-end=\"2265\">On each of the pet\u2019s five exhales, thrust <strong data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2262\">in and up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2266\" data-end=\"2334\">\n<p data-start=\"2269\" data-end=\"2334\">After the fifth thrust, open the mouth and check for an object.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 data-start=\"2336\" data-end=\"2368\">For Medium and Large Dogs:<\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2696\">\n<li data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2409\">\n<p data-start=\"2372\" data-end=\"2409\">Keep the dog standing on all fours.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2493\">\n<p data-start=\"2413\" data-end=\"2493\">Slide your fist along the rib cage until you reach the soft spot just past it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2548\">\n<p data-start=\"2497\" data-end=\"2548\">Place your other hand over your fist for support.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2549\" data-end=\"2631\">\n<p data-start=\"2552\" data-end=\"2631\">On each of the pet\u2019s five exhales, thrust <strong data-start=\"2594\" data-end=\"2628\">up and forward toward the head<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2696\">\n<p data-start=\"2635\" data-end=\"2696\">After the fifth thrust, check the mouth for an obstruction.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2698\" data-end=\"2777\">If your pet collapses and loses consciousness, immediately begin <strong data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2774\">pet CPR<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"2900\">\n<li data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"2803\">\n<p data-start=\"2780\" data-end=\"2803\">30 chest compressions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2804\" data-end=\"2842\">\n<p data-start=\"2806\" data-end=\"2842\">2 rescue breaths into the nostrils<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2843\" data-end=\"2900\">\n<p data-start=\"2845\" data-end=\"2900\">Repeat 30 compressions and 2 breaths as one CPR cycle<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"2902\" data-end=\"2938\">Prevention Is the Best Medicine<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2939\" data-end=\"3039\">Pets are naturally curious, and many explore the world with their mouths. To reduce choking risks:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3040\" data-end=\"3282\">\n<li data-start=\"3040\" data-end=\"3142\">\n<p data-start=\"3042\" data-end=\"3142\">Keep small objects like yarn, shoelaces, dental floss, fruit pits, and kibble pieces out of reach.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3195\">\n<p data-start=\"3145\" data-end=\"3195\">Supervise play with toys that could break apart.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3282\">\n<p data-start=\"3198\" data-end=\"3282\">Stay alert during walks or outdoor play where foreign objects may be within reach.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"3284\" data-end=\"3317\">Learn More and Get Certified<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3534\">The best way to be prepared is through <strong data-start=\"3357\" data-end=\"3391\">pet first aid and CPR training<\/strong>.
