It always felt like a safe haven for my leashed dogs to sniff and explore.<\/p>\n<p>That changed recently when the city announced the discovery of poison hemlock\u2014a highly toxic and invasive plant\u2014growing around the lake. City crews are now actively working to remove it and have urged dog owners to avoid the area in the meantime.<\/p>\n<h3>What Is Poison Hemlock?<\/h3>\n<p>Poison hemlock is a biennial plant known for its lacy, fern-like leaves and umbrella-shaped clusters of small white flowers. It\u2019s often mistaken for harmless plants like wild parsley or Queen Anne\u2019s lace.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t be fooled\u2014this plant is one of the most poisonous in North America, and it poses a deadly risk to people and pets alike, including horses.<\/p>\n<h3>Why Is Poison Hemlock So Dangerous to Dogs?<\/h3>\n<p>Poison hemlock contains toxic alkaloids, including cicutoxin, which affect the nervous system.
