The combination of hydrogen and oxygen molecules would generate foamy bubbles on the wound site, such as a scraped elbow or knee. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some have applied hydrogen peroxide to clean minor wounds on their dogs and cats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guess what? It turns out that hydrogen peroxide causes more harm than benefit when used externally on pets \u2013 or people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why it is important that our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catanddogfirstaid.com\/lp\/pet-first-aid-instructor-program\">Pro Pet Hero Instructors<\/a> educate their students, pet professionals and pet parents about the real truth about hydrogen peroxide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Truth about Hydrogen Peroxide<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2953\" src=\"https:\/\/www.protrainings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/80133286_s.jpeg\" alt=\"hydrogen peroxide\" width=\"238\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research in recent years has determined that this clear liquid not only kills the bacteria, but it can actually irritate or damage healthy skin cells and impair wound healing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa Lippman, DVM, is a house call veterinarian based in New York City, who previously worked in emergency animal clinics and general veterinary practices. She is also the first veterinarian to complete our Pro Pet Hero Instructor program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne should only use hydrogen peroxide orally to induce vomiting and only under a veterinarian\u2019s recommendation,\u201d she says. \u201cNever use hydrogen peroxide to clean a wound on a dog or cat because it stings and will damage the surrounding tissue. It also will slow down the natural healing process, making your pet more susceptible to infection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Other Things You Should Not Use on Wounds<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other wound-cleaning no-no\u2019s: rubbing alcohol, shampoos, tea tree oil or soaps. And never use any disinfectants containing phenols (such as Dettol) as these ingredients are toxic to cats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Safer options to clean minor cuts and wounds on dogs and cats include:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* Warm tap water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* Saline solution (in first aid packs or lens cleaning solutions)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* Diluted betadine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* Pet-safe antimicrobial ointment<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Keep Hydrogen Peroxide in Your Pet First Aid Kit<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrogen peroxide, however, has not been completely booted out of the pet first aid kit. Veterinarians do support giving hydrogen peroxide orally to induce vomiting in a dog or cat\u2026with this major caution:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never administer hydrogen peroxide in your pet\u2019s mouth to help him vomit up a poisonous substance, such as human pain medications or dark chocolate, unless instructed by a veterinarian. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You really need to know what the pet has ingested. Survey your surroundings. If your dog, for example, not only ate pain meds but also chewed the batteries in the television remote, giving him hydrogen peroxide could severely burn his insides due to the battery acid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Hydrogen Peroxide Dosage<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, the standard veterinarian-advised dosage is 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide per 10 pounds of weight of the affected pet. You may be advised to give two doses \u2013 about 10 minutes apart \u2013 before taking the pet to the nearest veterinary clinic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, play it safe. She joined the ProTrainings team in 2018 when they launched the pet first aid\/CPR instructor program. Since that time, she has trained about 500 Pro Pet Hero Instructors from all over North America.
